Using Vision Systems and Digital Work Instructions to Enforce Quality Checkpoints

In the pursuit of flawless execution, many manufacturers still rely on printed work instructions and manual sign-offs for complex assembly or inspection processes. This approach introduces risk: operators may skip critical steps, misinterpret outdated diagrams, or simply fail to log a crucial quality checkpoint.

At Automation & Engineering Solutions, we integrate the power of the Tulip Frontline Operations Platform with existing technology, like Vision Systems, to enforce a true "Go/No-Go" quality gate on the shop floor. This moves quality control from a retrospective review to an enforced part of the workflow.

From Static Paper to Dynamic Digital Guidance

Your most valuable asset is the data you generate. Paper-based processes—or even rigid legacy systems—fail because they cannot dynamically respond to real-time events or guarantee that a quality check was actually completed.

Tulip Apps replace static printouts with Digital Work Instructions that guide the operator through a task step-by-step. Crucially, these digital instructions can be programmed to enforce quality using data feedback before the operator is allowed to proceed.

Enforcing Quality with Vision Systems

Vision systems are a critical component of automation and visual inspection. We leverage our engineering expertise to ensure the data generated by these systems becomes a mandatory checkpoint within the Tulip workflow.

  1. Guided Assembly: An operator is digitally guided through an assembly process using a Tulip App. The app visually displays the correct procedure, often incorporating images or video.
  2. Required Verification: When the operator reaches a critical quality step—for example, verifying the correct placement of a component—the Tulip App prompts the operator to present the component to a nearby Vision System.
  3. Automatic Enforcement: The Vision System performs an automated quality check.
  • If the Check Passes (Go): The vision system sends instant digital data to the Tulip App, which automatically unlocks the next step of the work instruction, ensuring the process continues flawlessly.
  • If the Check Fails (No-Go): The Tulip App locks, displays an immediate alert, and may automatically trigger the Manufacturing Intelligence loop by notifying the Quality Manager, preventing the defect from moving further down the line.

This systematic approach guarantees flawless execution every time because the quality checkpoint is enforced by software and machine data, not by a manual sign-off on a piece of paper
